Buying Guide

How to Choose the Right Ramp

Choosing the right access solution depends on your environment, mobility device, and NDIS funding type. Follow these steps to find the best fit.

01

Measure the Height Difference

Before selecting a ramp, measure the exact height difference between the lower and upper surfaces. The ramp length needed depends on this rise — a steeper incline is harder to navigate and may not meet accessibility standards.

02

Consider the Slope Ratio

For wheelchair and scooter users, a slope ratio of 1:8 (rise to run) is generally the maximum recommended gradient. For self-propelling users, 1:12 or gentler is preferred. Our team can help calculate the right ramp length for your situation.

03

Check Weight Capacity

Ensure the ramp or platform you choose can safely support the combined weight of the user and their mobility device. Always select a product rated above your maximum expected load.

04

Get an OT or AT Assessment

An occupational therapist can assess your home or vehicle access needs and recommend the most appropriate ramp solution. This assessment is often required for NDIS funding approval.

05

Confirm NDIS Funding Eligibility

Ramps and access solutions may be funded under NDIS Assistive Technology or Home Modifications budgets depending on the item type and installation requirements. Our team can guide you through the right funding pathway.

NDIS Funding

Using Your NDIS Plan for Ramps & Access

Ramps and access solutions can be funded through both Assistive Technology and Home Modifications budgets depending on the product type and installation.

Assistive Technology (AT) Funding

Portable and vehicle ramps are typically classified as Assistive Technology under the NDIS. Depending on cost, they may fall under Low or Mid AT categories and may not require a formal assessment for lower-cost items.

Home Modifications (HM) Funding

Modular ramps, handrails, and access platforms that are permanently or semi-permanently installed at a home may be funded under the NDIS Home Modifications support category, which has its own budget line.

OT Assessment & Quotes

For mid-to-high cost AT items and home modifications, the NDIS typically requires an OT assessment report and a supplier quote. We work directly with your occupational therapist and Plan Manager to streamline this process.

Plan-Managed & Self-Managed

We support both plan-managed and self-managed NDIS participants. Our team will help you identify the correct funding category and ensure all documentation is in order for a smooth approval process.
